Glasses in Mong Kok: eye test, frames and lenses, one-to-one

Nini Optical is an upstairs optical shop at T.O.P. in Mong Kok. Every pair of glasses starts with an eye test by an optometrist, followed by frame and lens advice based on your prescription, face shape and daily routine. No rush and no hard selling.

Why an eye test comes before new glasses

Comfortable glasses start with an accurate prescription. Prescriptions change with age, work and screen habits, and wearing an outdated one can cause headaches, tired eyes or vision that is never quite sharp.

So the first step is always an eye test. Besides measuring short-sightedness, long-sightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia, the optometrist checks how your two eyes work together and looks at the health of your eyes before deciding on a prescription. See what the eye test covers.

How getting glasses works

  1. Book a slot Choose "Eyewear Fitting" online. If you also need contact lenses, choose "Eyewear & Contact Lens Fitting".
  2. Consultation and eye test The optometrist asks about your work, hobbies and any problems with your current glasses, then measures your prescription and carries out the checks you need.
  3. Choose a frame We suggest frame sizes and materials that suit your face shape, nose bridge, pupil distance and prescription strength.
  4. Lens advice We explain the lens options for your prescription and how you use your eyes, such as everyday wear, driving or long hours at a computer. You decide.
  5. Collection and adjustment When you collect your glasses we adjust the temples and nose pads so they sit securely and you see clearly.
  6. Follow-up If anything feels uncomfortable later, or the fit needs adjusting, come back and we will look at it.

Choosing lenses

There is no single "best" lens, only the one that suits your prescription and your life. Common types include:

  • Single-vision lenses One prescription across the whole lens. Used for short-sightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism, or as reading glasses.
  • Progressive lenses The prescription changes gradually from top to bottom, so you can see far, mid-range and near without swapping glasses. Suited to people with presbyopia.
  • Myopia control lenses for children Specially designed lenses for school-age children, and one of several ways to manage myopia. See myopia control for children.

The optometrist explains the differences between the options, including lens thickness, coatings and price, based on your test results. The choice is yours, with no hard selling.

Your first progressive lenses

Progressive lenses take some getting used to. These points help:

  • The frame needs enough height to fit the distance, mid-range and near zones.
  • Your pupil position is measured for the frame you choose, so the frame should not be swapped afterwards.
  • At first, turn your head to point at what you want to see instead of looking through the edges of the lens.
  • On stairs, lower your head and look through the upper part of the lens.

If you still find them hard to wear after a while, come back and we will check the frame position and prescription.

Glasses: frequently asked questions

Do I need an appointment to get glasses?

We recommend one. Nini Optical sees customers in one-to-one slots, so the optometrist has time to test your eyes and explain things properly. You can book online instantly or ask us on WhatsApp.

Do I have to buy glasses after the eye test?

No. The test tells you your current prescription and the condition of your eyes. If your existing glasses are still right for you, the optometrist will say so.

How much do glasses cost, and how long do they take?

Price and making time depend on the frame, the type of lens and your prescription. After the eye test we explain the options and prices, and you decide whether to go ahead. Feel free to ask on WhatsApp.

Can elders use Health Care Vouchers for glasses?

Eligible elders can use Health Care Vouchers towards applicable optometric services, but vouchers cannot be used solely to buy glasses. See using Health Care Vouchers.
